  • Anger Increases Health Risks

    Anger Leads to Heart Disease:

    A very angry person is three times more likely to have a heart attack than a person who is not angry.

    According to an article in the Harvard Mental Health Letter , published by Harvard University, June, 2002, when you get angry and hate someone, your heart rate and blood pressure go up, causing heart disease and hypertension.

    Men who already have a history of heart disease are far more likely to have another heart attack if they have high hostility levels.

    In a study reported by the St. John’s University School of Medicine on March 15, 2006 (See www.stjohnsuniversity.edu “Hostility is Predictor of Current Heart Attacks…”), researchers performed psychological tests on men who had already had a heart attack to determine their anger levels. The researchers then followed the men for four years and found that the ones who were classified as angry were much more likely to have another heart attack than the men who were not angry.

    Married couples whose communications are hostile and angry are far more likely to have hardening of the arteries, which leads directly to heart attacks, than those whose communications are not hostile. A study conducted at the University of Utah and reported by BBC News on March 4, 2006, showed that there is a direct relationship between angry and hostile communications and hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Professor Tim Smith, who led the research, was quoted in the article as saying, “Disagreements are an unavoidable fact of relationships.     Anger Shortens Your Life:

    Emotional pressures, such as anger and hostility, release chemicals into the body that are dangerous to your health.
    The British Heart Foundation head of medical information was quoted as saying that anger causes your body to produce chemicals that are harmful to your health, in the BBC News article, “Marital Rows Harm Heart Health” (March 4,2006)

    “Angry words can be as deadly as sticks and stones,” says Edward C. Suarez, PhD, of Duke University Medical Center (October 27, 1998,
    Annals of Behavioral Medicine). Hostility, meaning verbal or physical expression of anger and an antagonistic personal style, was the strongest predictor of heart disease. Overall, angry people had higher cholesterol than people who were not hostile.

    Anger causes your body to reduce its production of healthy hormones that prevent aging.

    According too Dr. Stephen Cherniske, author of The Metabolic Anti-Aging Plan, June, 2003, DHEA, which helps us to stay youthful and live longer, goes down when people are angry and hostile.

    Anger Can Cause Accidents and Injuries:

    Being angry, enraged or furious makes you more likely to be injured.
    A study described by Randy Dotinga in Health Day News, January 31, 2006, a survey of injured men in emergency rooms showed that they were more likely to report that they were mad or furious at the time of their injury than they would be in a normal day.

    Expressing anger makes rage problems worse.

    In Anger Buster 101, published in 2002 , Newton Hightower summarizes many medical studies on the physical effects of anger, which causes biochemical changes in your body, leading to many physical ailments. People who rage a lot have more health problems than people who don’t. Moreover, according to Hightower, rage is a drug – the more you rage, the more you need to rage. He describes how anger expression and raging meets all the criteria of an addiction.

    Psychological theories that say it’s good to express anger are misleading, because expressing anger doesn’t make it go away; it makes it worse.

    Research Summary: Studies on this subject claim that patients treated with hypnosis had greater satisfaction with birth, shorter labor, and they used significantly less analgesic medications than control patients. There is also evidence that hypnosis facilitates pregnancy in women who are undergoing in vitro fertilization interventions.

    Key Findings: hypnosis helps reduce labor and delivery pain significantly and the need for medication during and after labor and delivery. Moreover, hypnosis proved to be an effective adjunct to the medical treatment of preterm labor in a case of quadruplets.

  • Broken Heart Syndrome – Yes You can Die from a Broken Heart

    Emotional Stress Can Trigger Broken Heart Syndrome, Putting Middle-Age Women at Risk

    There’s a saying that no one ever died from a , but science shows it can still do a lot of damage. For a person with what’s known as Broken Heart Syndrome, an emotional stress like the death of a loved one can cause a seemingly healthy heart to stop working normally.

    Doctors estimate 1 to 2 percent of patients who are diagnosed with a heart attack in the U.S. are actually suffering broken heart syndrome. The confusion occurs because patients have many of the same symptoms as a heart attack, including chest pains and shortness of breath.

    Inside the body, though, broken heart syndrome looks very different from a heart attack. While a heart attack is usually caused by blocked arteries, medical experts believe broken heart syndrome is caused by a surge in adrenaline and other hormones. When patients experience an adrenaline rush in the aftermath of a stressful situation, the heart muscle may be overwhelmed and become temporarily weakened. The left ventricle of the heart takes on a cone-like shape that resembles a Japanese pot used to capture an octopus. That shape gives the condition its medical name — Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

    Middle-Aged Women at Risk of Broken Heart Syndrome

    Broken heart syndrome can occur following any kind of stress — everything from a death in the family to fear of public speaking. It can also be caused by physical stress, like an asthma attack or seizure. In a study of some 254 broken heart syndrome patients, the American Journal of Cardiology found that 27 percent of patients had suffered an emotional stress, 39 percent a physical stress, and 24 percent couldn’t identify a stress at all.

    The vast majority of broken heart syndrome sufferers are women — studies suggest that 90 to 95 percent of patients are female, and most of them have already gone through menopause. Experts aren’t sure why middle-aged women are at greater risk for a broken heart, but sex differences in hormones are one possible cause.

    No Known Way to Prevent Broken Heart, But Most Recover

    Unfortunately, there’s no known way to prevent broken heart syndrome. Many of the patients are healthy and active — not people you’d guess would have a heart problem.

    Most broken heart patients have a complete recovery and suffer no long-term damage to their hearts. Nearly 95 percent of patients have a complete recovery within two months. While the syndrome can recur, anecdotal evidence suggests it’s not likely. Doctors at Johns Hopkins say that in five years of following patients, none have experienced broken heart syndrome a second time.

  • Evolution Could Explain Placebo Effect

    ON THE face of it, the placebo effect makes no sense. Someone suffering from a low-level infection will recover just as nicely whether they take an active drug or a simple sugar pill. This suggests people are able to heal themselves unaided – so why wait for a sugar pill to prompt recovery?

    New evidence from a computer model offers a possible evolutionary explanation, and suggests that the immune system has an on-off switch controlled by the mind.

    It all starts with the observation that something similar to the placebo effect occurs in many animals, says Peter Trimmer, a biologist at the University of Bristol, UK. For instance, Siberian hamsters do little to fight an infection if the lights above their lab cage mimic the short days and long nights of winter. But changing the lighting pattern to give the impression of summer causes them to mount a full immune response.

    Likewise, those people who think they are taking a drug but are really receiving a placebo can have a response which is twice that of those who receive no pills (Annals of Family Medicine, doi.org/cckm8b). In Siberian hamsters and people, intervention creates a mental cue that kick-starts the immune response.

    There is a simple explanation, says Trimmer: the immune system is costly to run – so costly that a strong and sustained response could dangerously drain an animal’s energy reserves. In other words, as long as the infection is not lethal, it pays to wait for a sign that fighting it will not endanger the animal in other ways.

    Nicholas Humphrey, a retired psychologist formerly at the London School of Economics, first proposed this idea a decade ago, but only now has evidence to support it emerged from a computer model designed by Trimmer and his colleagues.

    According to Humphrey’s picture, the Siberian hamster subconsciously acts on a cue that it is summer because food supplies to sustain an immune response are plentiful at that time of year. We subconsciously respond to treatment – even a sham one – because it comes with assurances that it will weaken the infection, allowing our immune response to succeed rapidly without straining the body’s resources.

    Trimmer’s simulation is built on this assumption – that animals need to spend vital resources on fighting low-level infections. The model revealed that, in challenging environments, animals lived longer and sired more offspring if they endured infections without mounting an immune response. In more favourable environments, it was best for animals to mount an immune response and return to health as quickly as possible (Evolution and Human Behavior, doi.org/h8p). The results show a clear evolutionary benefit to switching the immune system on and off depending on environmental conditions.

    “I’m pleased to see that my theory stands up to computational modelling,” says Humphrey. If the idea is right, he adds, it means we have misunderstood the nature of placebos. Farming and other innovations in the past 10,000 years mean that many people have a stable food supply and can safely mount a full immune response at any time – but our subconscious switch has not yet adapted to this. A placebo tricks the mind into thinking it is an ideal time to switch on an immune response, says Humphrey.

    Paul Enck at the University of Tübingen in Germany says it is an intriguing idea, but points out that there are many different placebo responses, depending on the disease. It is unlikely that a single mechanism explains them all, he says.

  • Childhood Trauma – Break the Cycle

    Painful experiences early in life can alter the brain in lasting ways.

    A difficult reality for psychiatrists and counselors of child abuse is that young victims are at high risk of becoming offenders themselves one day, although it’s unclear why. But now a team of behavioral geneticists in Switzerland report a possible reason: early psychological trauma may actually cause lasting changes in the brain that promote aggressive behavior in adulthood.

    Writing this week Translational Psychiatry, the researchers describe a series or experiments conducted in rats that led them to that conclusion. Animals placed in traumatic, fear-inducing situations around the time of puberty show high and sustained levels of aggression later in life. And while rats cannot substitute for humans, the scared rats also showed changes in hormone levels, brain activity, and genetic expression that appear very similar to traits observed among troubled and unusually violent people.

     

     
    The main implication of the research, says study co-author Carmen Sandi, is that it links two previously observed phenomena: the higher rate of aggression among those experiencing early-life stress, and the blunted activation of a brain region known as the orbitofrontal cortex among people with pathological aggression. Social learning, it seems, may not be the only thing that makes abused kids more likely to grow up aggressive.

    “This is a key finding which highlights the importance of not only developing social programs and politics, but also of reinforcing research that could offer valid [medical] treatments for individuals that have been victimized early in life,” says Sandi, the director of the Brain Mind Institute at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, in an email discussing the study. “We need to understand the neurobiological mechanisms to offer better solutions to break ‘the cycle of violence.’”

    In the study, Sandi and colleagues tested the rats for changes in specific regions of the brain following long periods of fear, and then tested a potential treatment to determine if it was possible to undo those brain changes.

    They began by exposing about 40 pubescent male rats for a few minutes at a time over several days, to severe stress — which, for the rats was either the scent of a fox or being stranded on a brightly lit platform. Those rats immediately showed higher levels of stress hormones and later puberty onset than similar animals not exposed to those experiences.

    As adults, the stressed rats showed greater aggression toward other males they met — even ones that were clearly not a threat because they were much smaller or even anesthetized. And the once-stressed animals also showed more signs of depression and anxiety, including a reduced interest in food, lower sociability, and a tendency to give up quickly when faced with a challenge.

    Those behavioral changes were accompanied by neurobiological changes in the brain as well. Compared to normal rats, the once-fearful ones had higher levels of the hormone testosterone, which is linked to aggression. They also showed more activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for emotions such as fear and anxiety, and altered connectivity between the amygdala and a region of the brain involved in decision-making. These brain alterations were also correlated with enhanced expression of the gene for an enzyme known as monoamine oxidase A, or MAOA, providing the scientists with a potential way to reverse the effects of the early traumas. Indeed, treating the rats with an MAOA inhibitor helped to restore normal social behavior and reduce aggression in the formerly stressed animals.

    It turns out that the MAOA gene is also related to aggressive behavior in people, and certain inherited variants of the gene have also been linked to aggressive tendencies. Because the new study showed that MAOA inhibitors were effective in treating pathological aggression in rats, Sandi says the findings might suggest a similar drug treatment for humans, too, to complement behavioral therapy.

    “What we show in our study is that, regardless of the genetic background, exposure to early life trauma can on its own affect the expression levels of this molecule in the brain,” Sandi says. “Our work is novel in many ways, particularly because it provides concrete neurobiological pathways that link early trauma with pathological aggression.”

    Why would early traumatic experiences crave permanent changes in the brain? Evolutionarily, such brain changes may have helped us to survive a harsh and cruel environment, by keeping us on edge and ready to confront any possible threats, Sandi says. Today, however, those same changes may do more harm than good, leading some victims of abuse to slip into a vicious cycle, seeing threats where none exist, and overreacting to situations, often with violence. It’s possible that some people may be genetically more sensitive to the changes triggered by painful experiences, and therefore more likely to benefit from treatments that can address those genetic differences. Better understanding of why vicious cycles of violence exist may help researchers to find ways to break them.

    Most of us have experienced some degree of emotional and psychological trauma during childhood. Maybe it was the school bully or an overly strict parent.     What is Emotional and Psychological Trauma?

    Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless and vulnerable in a dangerous world.

    Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety, but any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and alone can be traumatic, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. It’s not the objective facts that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your subjective emotional experience of the event. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized.

     

     

    Causes of Emotional and Psychological Trauma

    An event will most likely lead to emotional or psychological trauma if:

    • It happened unexpectedly.
    • You were unprepared for it.
    • You felt powerless to prevent it.
    • It happened repeatedly.
    • Someone was intentionally cruel.
    • It happened in childhood.

    Emotional and psychological trauma can be caused by single-blow, one-time events, such as a horrible accident, a natural disaster, or a violent attack. Trauma can also stem from ongoing, relentless stress, such as living in a crime-ridden neighborhood or struggling with cancer.

    Commonly overlooked Causes
    of Emotional and Psychological Trauma

    • Falls or sports injuries
    • Surgery (especially in the first 3 years of life)
    • The sudden death of someone close or even a close pet
    • A car accident
    • The breakup of a significant relationship
    • A humiliating or deeply disappointing experience
    • The discovery of a life-threatening illness or disabling condition

    Risk factors that increase your vulnerability to Trauma

    Not all potentially traumatic events lead to lasting emotional and psychological damage. Some people rebound quickly from even the most tragic and shocking experiences. Others are devastated by experiences that, on the surface, appear to be less upsetting.

    A number of risk factors make people susceptible to emotional and psychological trauma. People are more likely to be traumatized by a stressful experience if they’re already under a heavy stress load or have recently suffered a series of losses.

    People are also more likely to be traumatized by a new situation if they’ve been traumatized before – especially if the earlier trauma occurred in childhood.

    Childhood trauma increases the risk of future trauma

    Experiencing trauma in childhood can have a severe and long-lasting effect. Children who have been traumatized see the world as a frightening and dangerous place. When childhood trauma is not resolved, this fundamental sense of fear and helplessness carries over into adulthood, setting the stage for further trauma.

    Childhood trauma results from anything that disrupts a child’s sense of safety and security, including:

    • An unstable or unsafe environment
    • Separation from a parent
    • Serious illness
    • Intrusive medical procedures
    • Sexual, physical, or verbal abuse
    • Domestic violence
    • Neglect
    • Bullying

    Symptoms of Emotional and Psychological Trauma

    Following a traumatic event, or repeated trauma, people react in different ways, experiencing a wide range of physical and emotional reactions. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to think, feel, or respond to trauma, so don’t judge your own reactions or those of other people. Your responses are NORMAL reactions to ABNORMAL events.

    Emotional and psychological symptoms of trauma:

    • Shock, denial, or disbelief
    • Anger, irritability, mood swings
    • Guilt, shame, self-blame
    • Feeling sad or hopeless
    • Confusion, difficulty concentrating

    What most people still don’t realise that our understanding of the unconscious mind has grown in leaps and bounds in recent times. Scientific exploration of the brain and nervous system and advances in the behavioural sciences has greatly increased our understanding of the functioning of the unconscious, or invisible, part of the mind.

    There are many different definitions of the unconscious mind floating around. To clarify, I consider the unconscious mind to be every part of the mind that is not under direct conscious control. Hence, for example muscular movements are mostly unconscious. By this definition the unconscious mind accounts for well over 90% (probably closer to 99%) of our total Mind capacity.

    I purposely referred to Mind capacity rather than mental capacity in the previous paragraph. While we associate the Mind with mental activity it is vitally important to understand that a very important function of the unconscious mind is to manage our emotions. Emotions originate in our unconscious and the unconscious is the primary place for managing our emotions. Advanced Hypnotherapy techniques are very effective in clearing painful unprocessed emotions from the past. Conscious therapies generally tend to take far longer to achieve the same outcome relating to clearing emotional pain.
